Which technological developments can overcome the challenges of the 21st century? How can biotechnology and engineering sciences contribute to the production of tomorrow?
A promising approach is to interlink biology and engineering even more than before. With an interdisciplinaryapproach ideas can open up new ways that reach beyond current use of the cell as a biotechnological production unit. In order to develop visions for the next generation of biotechnological processes and to initiate their implementation, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) made an agreement with research organizations and universities on a common, long-term strategy process. Here, the active participation of a large number of actors is required. The opening conference for the strategy process “Biotechnologie 2020+” was launched in Berlin on July 8, 2010.
